Heterosexism: the belief in the superiority of heterosexuality; the assumption that all people are heterosexual because heterosexuality is correct, right, or normal. Sex: the organic, biological assigned sex at birth-- based on physical appearance. Gender: the social expression that is either assigned to us, or that we perform. Sexual orientation: what you are attracted to, either sexually or romantically. Transgender: a person who does not identify as the sex they were assigned at birth. This is an umbrella term for someone whose assigned gender does not match their identity (often notated as trans*) Homophobia: the irrational fear of same sex attraction. Societal privilege: common advantage over others (racial, class, orientation, size, religion, etc). 1869: the year the term homosexual was coined--> thus creating a certain pathology, passing homosexuals off as the other The aids crisis (1980s-1990s): the discovery of hiv/aids was pivotal in the lgbt movement, since the disease primarily affected gay men.
