Medieval times: young children viewed as being a special period distinct from adults, children depicted in paintings. Reformation/puritans: children viewed as born evil, stubborn, and needing to be civilized, harsh and restrictive parenting practices were recommended, and disobedient students were beaten by schoolmasters, children dressed in restrive clothing. Table rasa (blank slate): children begin with nothing, who they become is shaped by experience. Parents can mold children through: instruction, example, and rewards for good behavior: jean0jacques rousseau.
