Document Summary
Major questions in developmental psychology: is there one course of development or are there many, to what extent does nature vs nurture determine development. Stability: emphasis on the contributions of heredity and early experience. Plasticity: emphasis on the flexibility of development and responsiveness to experience. Medieval times: young children viewed as being a special period distinct from adults, children depicted in paintings. Reformation/puritans: children viewed as born evil, stubborn, and needing to be civilized, harsh and restrictive parenting practices were recommended, and disobedient students were beaten by schoolmasters, children dressed in restrive clothing. Table rasa (blank slate): children begin with nothing, who they become is shaped by experience. Parents can mold children through: instruction, example, and rewards for good behavior: jean0jacques rousseau. Noble savage: children born with a naturally endowed sense of right and wrong, and an innate plan for growth and development. Parents need to be sensitive to children"s needs and not focus on training.
