Document Summary

Automaticity: generate electrical impulse all on its own. Conductivity: impulse can carry from one cell to next. Av: delay in electrical impulse from sa node to ventricle, intrinsic rate 40-60. Inotropic: positive inotropic makes the heart contract harder, negative makes it slower. Chronotropic: how quickly or slowly the rate contracts, the rate. Dromotropic: speed of conduction, some drugs increase or decrease speed of conduction. Cardiac output: amount of blood that comes out with every contraction. Starling"s law: the heart can enlarge to a point and will fail if it stretches too far. E. g. rubber band stretching out too far, it will fail heart failure: enlarged and stretched so far it is not effective as a pump anymore. Preload: amount of stretch on the ventricle based on the amount of blood. Afterload: resistance the heart has to work against to get blood out. Ejection fraction: % of blood that get pumped out.
