Pre-op teaching: exercises to strength upper extremities, phantom limb sensation. Post-op care: below the knee/above the knee amputation. Positioning to prevent flexion contractures: avoid sitting in chair for more than 1 hour at a time, lay on stomach 3-4 times a day, no pillows under surgical extremity. Inspect residual limb daily for signs or skin irritation: wash limb with warm water and bacteriostatic soap daily and let dry for 20 mins, wear clean limb sock, positioning to prevent contractures. Exchange of substances between tissues and blood.
