80% of info that you get from world comes thru your visual syst. 70% of the sensory receptors in the whole body are in the retinas. The stim for vision is electromagnetic energy, specifically , the visible spectrum. The funct of the eye is to focus this energy, transduce it into a neuronal signal, then to start processing this signal. Prey animals have eyes located on the side of their head so as to maximized fov. Predators have centrally positioned eyes so as to max binocular depth perception. Binocular vision in primates helps us use tools. Enclosed by 3 membranes: fibrous tunic - outermost membrane. Cornea transparent front part of the eye. Very tough; gives the globe its structure. Opaque: vascular tunic middle membrane. Contains blood vssels tht feed the eye. Heavily pigmented to absorb scattered light (pigment epithelium) Iris colored diaphragm muscle that determines pupil size.
