Document Summary
Budget of billion - less than fda. Job is to keep drugs on the list of drugs that are controlled substances (1970 act) out of the country. I: two criteria that put a drug on schedule i. Ex: opiates, recreational drugs/hallucinogens, cns stimulants, cns depressants, misc. Fentanyl derivative: similar to opiates, very potent, causing overdoses. About 30 recreational drugs, including lsd, peyote, ecstasy, mushrooms. Cns stimulants: khat - naturally occurring, used to make bath salts. Cns depressants: rohypnol, ghb, aka date rape drugs. Somewhat used for medicinal purposes, less restrictive. Opiates thought to be easier to control than those in schedule i. Using arsenic and combining it with other salts to make it less dangerous. Receptor theory: one place in the body you are trying to get to when taking a drug. Ex: sudafed (used for nasal congestion) can be changed to both methamphetamine and ecstasy with a small chemical change.
