PSY 348 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Anterior Cingulate Cortex, Central Nervous System, Adrenal Medulla
Document Summary
Somatic: nerves to voluntary muscles of the body. Parasympathetic: digestion, relaxation, breathing, feeding, maintaining base rates of things. = spinal cord and 4 key brain regions: brainstem: medulla, pons, midbrain, cerebellum: motor control, diencephalon: thalamus & hypothalamus, cerebral hemispheres (l & r) Parallel disturbed processing: brain has more than one functional region or pathway to achieve its ends. Medulla: contains vital life support centers breathing, heartbeat, automatic things. Pons: transmits info regarding body"s movement from the cerebral hemisphere to the cerebellum. Midbrain: controls and coordinates many sensory and motor activities voluntary muscle movement. Thalamus: lies above midbrain; amplifies signals to make them stand out against background noise. Hypothalamus: center for the fight-or-flight reaction that becomes activated when you become consciously aware of a threat also involved in motivational roles, skeletal motor functions, and homeostasis. Neocortex: the highest center of the brain contains many neurons used for sensation, perception, emotion, etc.
