For types of prejudice like racism and sexism, prejudice has gone underground . People are much less likely to overtly express negative attitudes or stereotypes about someone due to their race/ethnicity or gender. After wwii: shift in perceptions of racism in the us. Gunnar myrdal: contradiction between american values and how they treat black individuals in the us. When interacting with a member of an outgroup, stereotypes and attitudes (prejudice) are activated unconsciously. Subtle form of prejudice that is only expressed when the individual believes it is easily rationalizable and seems not to be related to racism/prejudice. Issue is not whether minority groups should be equal, but rather how the equality should be implemented in policy, law, and employment. Belief that discrimination is no longer a problem. Less likely to support affirmative action & similar programs. Protestant work ethic (pwe): hard work leads to success. Patients: least satisfaction with physicians high on implicit prejudice, low on explicit prejudice.
