To make sure that the researchers could find these people, they took names and info of a friend or family member as a secondary contact. The social network had 12,067 people in it. They subjected the dataset to lots and lots of analyses. If a person you consider a friend becomes obese, the researchers found, your own chances of becoming obese go up 57 percent. Among mutual friends, the effect is even stronger, with chances increasing 171 percent. Social networks have clusters of happy and unhappy people within them that reach out to three degrees of separation. Each additional happy friend increases a person"s probability of being happy by about 9% Average of 110 friends , but only six picture friends . Looked at whether people were smiling in the pictures. Pro: possible to study rare or interesting situations. Cons: results may not generalize to other situations. Study of motor asymmetry by observing kissing in naturalistic settings.
