Lecture notes: sensory coding: touch, pain, hearing, smell & taste. To prepare for exam 2: in addition to the sensory systems, you are expected study ch 3 of the pinel textbook (9th edition: pp. 59-62 and 67-68), or you can study ch 1 of the uthsch neuroscience online (sections 1. 2 and 1. 6). Use the notes posted on blackboard as your study guide (lect2_anatomy_study_guide. pdf). Sensory systems: visual auditory, somatosensory, gustatory, olfactory information processing. Systems are how we interact with the environment (ex. Motor systems: eye head, hand, and body movement control. Higher order systems: integration of various senses, cognition, learning & memory. Limbic system: emotion, motivation (not covered in class) Spinal cord - interface with the pns; motor reflexes. A lot of nerves come through, signals move up the brainstem midbrain cortex. Output determines action motor signal travels opposite direction, travels through motor nerves. Some of the pns issues are overlooked. Brain has holes in it filled with ventricles.
