PSY 220 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Plantar Reflex, Primitive Reflexes, Menarche
Document Summary
Proximodistal: from the center outward to extremities. Orthogenic: development starts globally and undifferentiated and proceeds toward hierarchal integration and differentiation. Newborns typically weigh 7 to 7 pounds and are about 20 in long. By age 2, are about half their eventual adult height and weigh 27-30 pounds on average. Growth occurs in fits and starts and often is accompanied by irritability. Mothers using food to soothe babies and correlation to child weigh status. Survival reflexes are adaptive breathing, eye blink, sucking. Primitive reflexes are less adaptive and typically disappear in early infancy: babinski reflex (extension of big toe when foot is stimulated, grasping reflex, persistence of primitive reflexes can suggest neurological problems. Milestones used during first year of infancy such as being able to lift head, rolling over from stomach etc to see how their motor skills are developing. Children learn to move capably in a changing environment. By age 3, walk or run in a straight line.
