Social cognition and relationships: interpersonal attraction, love, and positive human interactions. Attraction: what psychological factors promote attraction: proximity/familiarity. Mere exposure effect (attractive classmate study: physical attractiveness. Attractive people perceived to be happier, more sensitive, more successful, and more socially skilled. Cultural standards vary, but, internationally, men prefer features in women that suggest youth and health and women prefer men with signs of resources and social status. In real life, opposites tend not to attract. Friends and couples more likely to share common attitudes, beliefs, and interests, and be of similar age, religion, race, education, intelligence, have similar smoking behavior, and economic status: people whose presence is rewarding (reciprocity) People who are proximal may be rewarding to be with because it takes less time and effort to develop the relationship. People who are attractive are aesthetically pleasing, and associating with them can be socially rewarding.
