The experience sampling method, also referred to as a daily diary method, or ecological: consciousness: the subjective experience of perceiving oneself and one"s surroundings. At any given time, you can only be aware of a very small amount of the information that is potentially available to you. * unattended information (cocktail party phenomenon: studying the contents of consciousness: experience sampling momentary assessment (ema), is a research methodology that asks participants to stop at certain times and make notes of their experience in real time. Participants carried personal data assistants (pdas) for seven consecutive days. Over 14 waking hours, the pda prompted the participants seven times to provide information. Participants (ages 18 to 55; average = age 25) provided 10,558 responses. Research of this sort gives you a sense of the norms of mental life: the functions of consciousness (from kahneman, 2011): * brace for the starter gun in a race. * focus attention on the clowns in the circus.
