Majority of subjects are found to have low susceptibility to hypnosis. Wiechman askay et al. (2007): hypnosis for burn wound care. Participants were randomly assigned to hypnosis or relaxation conditions. The hospital personnel did not know which patients were in which groups. Participants who underwent hypnosis reported less pain after the intervention. Note: in other studies, pain reduction is greatest for those people who are also most highly hypnotizable. To infer private states from public acts. To assign responsibility for actions (e. g. , internal vs. external) To explain perseverance in the face of adversity. Drives: there are biological forces that provide basic goals (e. g. , to eat and to drink). Homeostatis: we are biologically driven to maintain optimal levels of body temperature, body weight, and various types of experiences. Extrinsic motivation: rewards the act might bring or punishments it might avoid. Intrinsic motivation: the pleasure the act itself provides.
