Sometimes we are aware/consciously controlling our cognitions (system 2 processing), How do people process political information? (last class) What impacts how people process political information? (today) Review from last time judgments, and decision making processing and sometimes we are unaware (system 1, fast/habitual/unconscious, processing) The psychologists view: biased/ motivated processing cognitive biases impact how we process political information. Cognitive biases overview weighted as more important in judgments. Cognitive biases exist as they are often adaptive. Then update their prior beliefs based on how they perceive the information. New information is learned and existing political beliefs are updated accordingly ex. Learning the economy is improving should lead to a belief that the economy is. Cognitive biases: systematic pattern of deviation from rational judgments. Biases in what we remember, how we interpret information, and what information is.
