Taxation without representation, colonists were being taxed and they had no political representation because they were ruled from overseas (sugar act, stamp act) From these issues with taxation, the boston massacre, the boston tea party etc. Ben franklin proposed a the first continental congress to meet in philadelphia (1774) Discussed grievances with king george iii (olive branch petition)- was rejected. 1775 the second continental congress occurred- sitting government (1775-1761) George washington became the commander of the new continental army (revolutionary war) Common sense- thomas paine, called for independence, called for public support behind the revolution. Grievances against the king were listed in the declaration of independence, it also declared that the u. s. was going to be 13 free and independent states (not asking, telling) Need for common legal document/ authority; was established first constitution of the u. s. ". Articles of confederation needed to be consented unanimously by all 13 states, 1781 the articles were consented upon.
