Industry more & more turning into machinery rather than skills. Small plants founded by individuals who worked in skills, inventors. Company controlled by individuals became a family. Shoemaker used to be an artisan who made on order - very personal. Machines - cutting leather, sewing the soles. Skilled worker leading a team to create steal (before) Mechanization & semi-skilled workers: non knowledge of whole process of steelmaking. Isolation of workers - no ties of the team; dependence on company. Company paid wages to individual workers - before: worker paid worker tie worker to the company. Job ladder - small wage increments = sense of mobility.
