Too much competition from nothern big steel . Cash crops, sharecropping, crop -lien system (take out a loan & pledge your harvest as collateral ~ problem: money borrowed & the price of crop debt) [-- white farmers ] Wanted something as close to slavery as possible. Use of black sharecropper"s vote by large landowners; exclusion of small farmers.
