Expected learning outcomes for this course include a basic knowledge of the events of that which we call american history for its first several centuries. It will include discussions of the interactions of peoples in the new world, european expansion, economic development, slavery and the slave trade, and nation-building. It will encourage critical thinking about the creation of the united states within that larger context. Students will learn to read and analyze original sources, to consider how to evaluate historical arguments and discuss them, and to write coherent analytical essays.
