Lecture 3 - plate tectonics -- the unifying theory. Atmospheric and oceanic circulation and climate (where the rain and drought belts are) Geographic distribution and the evolution and extinction of organisms. These ideas only became mainstream recently in the 60s. He thought that these continents were all attached to each other forming a supercontinent. Proposed the name gondwanaland (or gondwana) for supercontinent composed of these continents. The people in the southern hemisphere more readily accepted these ideas since there was more evidence for continental drift. Frank taylor (usa, 1910) - presented early hypothesis of continental drift including: Continent broke apart at center of atlantic the mid-atlantic ridge to form the atlantic. Tidal forces pulled formerly polar continents toward equator, when earth captured moon ~ He thought that all the continents started all at the poles at first, but this hypothesis was incorrect as the moon is much older than that.
