Concepts generalized ideas that rep something of meaning. Researchers measure concepts thru a process knonw as operationalization. Scales capture variance in concepts and as such, the secales provide researcher"s var. Consturcts multiple things to measure/convey one thing. Important b/c determines math comparisons that are allowed. Nominal: qualitative, airport terminals, school bus numbers, uniform numbers. Ordinal- allow things to be arranged based on how much of some concept they possess; include ranking scales: arbitrary. Interval capture info about diff in quantities of a concept: do not exactly rep some phenomenon. Ratio highest form of measurement: represent absolute meaning, provide iconic measurement, zero has meaning absence of some concept. Discrete measures take on only one of a finite number of values. Continuous measures assign values anywhere along some scale range in place tht corresponds of intensity of some concept. Means and standard may be calculated from continuous data. Researchers should keep in mind distinction b/w ratio and interval measurements.
