Assignment #7
After reading this passage, it is evident that moral character and physical appearance go
hand in hand in ancient Greek aesthetics and culture. This is apparent in The Illiad, as Homor
describes Thersites' character stating, “his head was full of obscenities, teeming with rant”, and
proceeds to call him “the ugliest man who ever came to Troy.” This directly relates poor moral
character with unappealing physique. This gives us an idea of the relationship between moral
character and physical appearance in ancient Greece — beauty is associated with good moral
character.
