Assignment #5
When comparing and contrasting the “Standing Male Worshipper” and “Kneeling Statue
of Hatshepsut, many things come to mind. The Standing Male Worshipper statue is about 10 x 4
inches dating back to 2,900-2,600 BCE during the Early Dynastic Period of Mesopotamia. He
portrayed an elite member of the Sumerian culture and was created to stand in and give eternal
worship to the gods. The Kneeling Statue of Hatshepsut, on the other hand, is from the Egyptian
New Kingdom period dating around 1400 BCE and depicts Hatshepsut, a female pharaoh,
making an offering to the gods. The statue of her was created for the Mortuary Temple of
Hatshepsut.
When comparing the two figures based on appearance, there are many differences
between the two. The Standing Male Worshipper statue is quite small compared to the Kneeling
Statue of Hatshepsut, which is over 8 feet tall. The material of the Standing Male Worshiper
figure is alabaster with black limestone (shown in the eyes) while the Kneeling Statue of
Hatshepsut was constructed using red granite. The Standing Male Worshiper statuette has a
narrow bony face with masculine features and stylized eyes. He has wavy and geometrically
shaped hair (including facial hair). The rest of his figure, below the arms, is cylinder-shaped and
portrays the clothing that he wears. On the other hand, Hatshepsut has a round soft looking face
with dainty female features, but her body shows diminished breasts and a lack of muscle
