Document Summary
The cosmopolitan spirit of the early roman stoic philosophers. It was similar to greek philosophy, however there were differences which deserve to be recognized. Idea to think about: why do we care more about americans than other people in the world: we share a history, a(cid:374)d ideally (cid:449)e(cid:859)d share si(cid:373)ilar (cid:271)eliefs/(cid:448)alues. If (cid:449)e (cid:272)a(cid:374)(cid:859)t e(cid:374)sure the su(cid:272)(cid:272)ess of our (cid:272)ou(cid:374)try ho(cid:449) (cid:272)a(cid:374) (cid:449)e e(cid:374)sure the success of others. Is it justified: not really, we are all hu(cid:373)a(cid:374) (cid:271)ei(cid:374)gs, a(cid:374)d (cid:271)ei(cid:374)g (cid:271)or(cid:374) so(cid:373)e(cid:449)here does(cid:374)(cid:859)t (cid:373)ake you (cid:271)etter or worse than anyone else. Plutarch: we should think of ourselves as one large community, we should(cid:374)(cid:859)t ide(cid:374)tify as a person of a certain region. Seneca the younger (1 65 ce: there are two different communities, 1) community of the universe, prioritized over second community, 2) community one is born into, everyone is always part of a community.
