This is a network layer protocol, it uses datagram service(connection less) like a postal mail, There is one more service of virtual circuits(connection oriented) like the telephone service. The routers are responsible for doing the forwarding. Whenever it receives the packet it see the routing table and forwards the packet to the appropriate route. Routing refers to the network-wide process that determines the end-to-end paths that packets take from source to destination. The connection oriented and connectionless services in network layer:the netwrork layer provides two kinds of connection :1 virtual circuit (connection oriented) 2. Virtual circuit(vc) : the implementation of virtual circuit can take place in the following way: A packet belonging to a virtual circuit will carry a vc number in its header. Because a virtual circuit may have a different vc number on each link, each intervening router must replace the vc number of each traversing packet with a new vc number.
