Griffith"s experiments: dealing with two strains, r harmless, s lethal, s strain killed mice, protein in s strain is responsible, s cells infect bacteria. Controls: positive control: group where there is a result, example: death from s cell infected bacteria, negative control: group where there should not be a result, example: cases where mice did not die. Lateral/horizontal gene transfer: genetic material can be transferred between organisms, not restricted to parent offspring, common in bacteria and major mechanism of antibiotic resistance, not all organisms can do this. What is the heritable material: from griffith"s experiments, knew it was something easily washed off cell membrane.
