Evolution of Aging- What it means to grow old in America
Your viewpoint of aging is determined based on what you think old age is
Typically, people think 75 and over is old.
18-34 demographic they think 50 is old.
Common concerns of growing older
Income
Health
Mobility
Fear of losing mind
Changes in perception about aging
Lifespans are extending. Longer due to medication, medical science, better nutrition, health care
Several myths about old age
Social Security and Medicare are running out of money
Elderly are a drain on our resources
Medical care is expensive and wasted on old
Older workers lack the technical skills needed in today’s world and they are not as effective as
young workers
We should look as ageings as a normal part and an important part of our society

Old were treated with respect and honor
Family took care of elders (no facilities)
Multiple generations living under one youth
Old age was a sense of respect especially if they were white males who owned land
Women, ethnic minorities were not given the same levels of respect
An old woman was called an “old crowne”
