South surrended to the north april 9, 1865 in virginia. Goal #1: transitioning former enslaved individuals to freedom and self sufficiently. Goal #2: reestablishing federal and local governments that are loyal to the union to prevent future conflict. Uniting post war was very hard and difficult to adjust back to prewar. Lincoln didn"t have power to free all and didn"t guarantee slaves equality. Thirteenth amendment: passed by congress in 1865 and this is what freed. All slaves remaining, it is illegal as of this. Freedmen"s bureau- established by a congress in 1865 to 1869. Indirectly provide education, responsibility of fb to finance it. In some states it was illegal for slaves to learn how to read. Sharecropping as fieldwork for wages (slaves didn"t have 11144 to move off of plantation), Cycle of debt and impossible to leave land. Crop lien: credit extended to laborers by country merchants for food/clothing/supplies, paid back w/ interest.
