Superior= toward the head end of upper part of body. Inferior= away from the head end and toward lower part of body. Palmar- in reference to hand, more towards the palm. While distal is more towards back of hand. Coronal plane (front plane)= divides body into anterior and posterior portions. Sagittal plane= divides body into left and right portions: midsagittal- 2 halves of equal portions; bilateral symmetry; passes through midline structures, parasagittal plane- parallel to sagittal plane but doesn"t pass through midline. Transverse plane (cross-sectional plane)= divides body into superior and inferior portions. Dorsal body cavity: cranial cavity, vertebral cavity-contains spinal cord. Ventral cavity- anterior surface of torso; divided by diaphragm muscle into upper thoracic cavity and abdominopelvic cavity. Thoracic cavity- the chest; contains trachea, bronchi, lungs, esophagus, heart, great blood vessels, thymus gland, lymph nodes, nerves: superior mediastinum, pleural cavity- surrounds lungs, pericardial cavity-contains heart.
