Anatomy= the study of the biological form of an organism. Physiology= the study of the biological functions an organism performs. Correlate= have a mutual relationship or connection, in which one thing affects or depends on another. Behavior= how an animal changes its relationship to the environment. Size and shape affect how an animal interacts with its enviro. Body plan of animal is programmed by genome. Physical laws govern strength, diffusion, movement, and heat exchange. Properties of water limit possible shapes for fast swimming animals. As animals increase in size, thicker skeletons are required for support. Convergent evolution results in similar adaptations of diverse organisms facing the same challenge. Nutrients, waste products, and gases must be exchanged across the cell membranes of animal cells. Rate of exchange is proportional to cell"s surface area. Amount of exchange is proportional to cell"s volume. Rate of energy (heat) exchange is proportional to body surface area. Amount of heat is proportional to body volume.
