Document Summary

Organisational culture can be evaluated through three layers where each is characterised by particular outward feature and approaches to change and each level influences other levels. Symbols object, act, quality or event that conveys meaning to others e. g low prices. Stories a narrative based on true events which is repeated to emphasize a particular value. They are oral histories that are told and retold by members about incidents in the organization history. Hero a person whose accomplishments embody the values of the organisation. Rites and rituals the activities and ceremonies planned and unplanned, that celebrate important occasions and accomplishments in the organisation"s life. The four functions: gives members organisational identity, facilitates collective commitment, promotes social-system stability, shapes behaviour by helping employees make sense of their surroundings. The fit perspective assumes that the organization"s culture must align with the business or strategic context. The adaptation perspective assumes most effective cultures help organisations anticipate and adapt to the environmental changes.
