HIST 120 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Santa Barbara City College, History Of Europe, Indulgence
Document Summary
Luther"s theses would inter alia call into question the boundaries of the authority of the pope. In particular, luther questioned whether the pope could remit sin"s guilt, and whether anyone could be granted remission of all penalties. Luther furthers asserted that their deaths exempted the dead from earthly punishments. He then found those preachers who sold indulgences in error "who say aman is exempted from every penalty by the indulgences of the pope, and saved. " Luther pointed out that any power the pope held had in the matter was granted only through intercession as a gateway to the grace of. God, meaning that the result of any intercession by the church was granted and held solely by god"s authority and power. The ninety-five theses left "condemnation" as their holding of these "letters of forgiveness" secured the reward for those who believed their salvation.
