Close reading = the skillset we are going to be using. ex) other fields look at data and draw conclusions - so in english, the text is our data. Close reading is analysis -- not summary (not saying the plot, etc) we are going deeper. Language influence our understanding (so we can analyse:) Analysis is grounded in the text - have to use textual evidence and lots of specific language and quotes from the text. Have to show what it is in this text that we are coming to conclusions about. We can do this for all types of texts (news articles, historical documents, images, tv, etc) 5 steps: read the [whole] text (before start doing the analysis, identify major issues, conflicts, ideas, themes, ideologies, etc. after our first read (gives us the categories we are going to be using). What does all that"s written relate to character - that person?).
