Never make assumptions: don"t assume there are a fixed number of reasons. Know when to interject new questions appropriately or responses: make your questions as general as possible in the beginning, get brief background on interviewee, rephrase question if misinterpreted, interviewer should gauge examples given by interviewee. Helps you know what not to do for your design: what did you like , learn to ask well oriented and detailed questions. Avoid yes/no questions unless necessary: understand the goals of interviewee"s story, compare and contrast stories when a single thing changes. (ex. Personal vs business travel trips: if interviewee is very personal, don"t cut the flow, continue on with other relevant questions before asking your main questions, acknowledge everything personal or memorable they did is relevant.
