Sexual scripts: sexual acts recognized by a particular social group. Dictates the punishments for violating the rules. Operate at societal, interactional and individual levels. Reality tv shows, literature:romance novels, magazines, interviews, surveys. Us scripts are guided by notions of romance: love is all you need; a loving woman heels an aggressive or indifferent man. Strong belief that love is necessary for relationships; relationships lead to marriage. Dating seen as a game; a competition. Mixed messages on female sexuality, advances towards egalitarianism yet women still portrayed as coy objects. In much the world, marriages are arranged by family members not by the bride and groom; strengthening social status is key. Studies show among young, white college students, men are more likely to believe true love comes only once, lasts forever, and overcomes obstacles. The same men reported being less likely to initiate break-up. Many women related ending relationships with relief.
