We have more control and choice in our daily lives than we might otherwise acknowledge. Individuals are free to make their own choices about their own behaviors. Incongruence - discrepancy between self concept and actual experience. Distortion - defense mechanism, bring experience to awareness but bring it to our self-concept. Important to give yourself and others unconditional positive regards. Quick assessment to determine level of real and ideal self-congruence. Rate yourself on the list of adjectives on a scale from 1-7 the extent to which each of the adjectives typically describes you. Determine difference identity items that generate the highest difference scores. These represent aspects of yourself that you would most like to change. Safety needs - security of body, employment, resources. Love and belongingness needs - friendship and family. Esteem needs - self-esteem, confidence, achievement, respect of others. Q-sort - tracks progress and success of therapy. Assessment technique used to measure progress of therapy.
