PSY 321 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Scientific Management, Motivation, Job Rotation
Document Summary
Chapter 9 & 10: job characteristics and work motivation. Job content - actual features of characteristics of one"s work, or the work itself. Four major theories that emphasize the job content intervention approach: Hygiene factors - things that would lead to employee dissatisfaction. Not having them will make you hate your job, but not necessarily make you love your job. Surround the work rather than the work itself. Ie. pay, fringe benefits, relations with coworkers, physical working conditions. Ie. level of challenge, level of autonomy or discretion, intrinsic interest, opportunities for creativity. Theory suggests that the same work environment factors that drive one"s dissatisfaction with the job are not the same as those that drive satisfaction and motivation to do a good job. Implications of the two categories for employee motivation. Helps keep employees from being dissatisfied (and doing their worse) Best jobs have high hygiene factors and motivators. High motivation and low hygiene = hard but meaningful job.
