PSY 260 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Pituitary Gland, Pituitary Stalk, Posterior Pituitary
Document Summary
The endocrine system: basic structures & functions. Pineal gland: reproductive maturation and body rhythms. Pituitary gland: anterior: hormone secretion by thyroid, adrenal cortex, gonads also growth, posterior: water and salt balance. Thyroid: growth and development and metabolic rate. Adrenal glands: adrenal cortex: salt and carbohydrate metabolism, in ammatory reactions, adrenal medulla: emotional arousal. Gonads: body development, maintenance of reproductive organs in adults: hormones. Body uses hormone system to communicate between cells. Hormone: a chemical, usually secreted by a gland, that is conveyed through the bloodstream and regulates target organs/tissues: changes in hormone levels can produce striking changes in brain function. Endocrine glands: produce/secrete hormones within the body: exocrine glands: secrete uids outside of the body (tears, saliva, sweat, etc. ) Rooster experiment: testes were removed no masculinity form, testes replaced later in life masculine traits formed. Suggests test create some sort of signal (now known as testosterone) Communications: endocrine: hormone released into bloodstream to affect distant target organs.
