Development: systematic changes that occur during an individual"s lifespan (conception to death) Goals of developmental scientists: describing development across the lifespan. Describing changes and processes in each period. De ning critical periods - what has to develop during this period, key to development. De ning sensitive periods - things that are important to development - such as emotional regulation. Identify how development expands / builds / replaces on what development has happened before: examining individual differences in the developmental patterns. Comparing sex, race, social environment, diet, etc: explaining the reasons that changes occur through out the lifespan, optimize development. Examples: enhancing attachment between depressed mothers and their infants, social skills training for socially rejected children, marriage enrichment program. Multidirectional - development isn"t always linear or predictable, each trait follows it"s own trajectory.
