P H 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Statin, Cardiovascular Disease, Lipoprotein
Document Summary
Not deadly in short term but have severe impacts on the quality of life (qol) Long period of onset, see them later on in life. Disease of the heart and blood vessels. Cvd encompasses two leading causes of death in the us: heart disease and stroke. Causes are well established: plaque begins at early age in us, american diet raises risk, diet, high blood pressure, diabetes, and smoking interact, causing damage to artery walls. Total cholesterol level- low is better: low density lipoprotein (ldl) low is better, high density lipoprotein (hdl) high is better. Exercise lowers total cholesterol and increase hdl. Use of statins for secondary prevention is widespread: class of drugs often prescribed by doctors to help lower cholesterol levels in the blood. Hypertension: high blood pressure (cid:862)esse(cid:374)tial hyperte(cid:374)sio(cid:374)(cid:863) is high blood pressure that has no known cause. Hypertension is an important risk factor for cvd. Obesity, smoking, stress, salt are risk factors.
