MGT 357 Lecture Notes - Lecture 19: Intellectual Capital, Femininity, Masculinity
Document Summary
Low power distance suggests motivation by teamwork and peers. Suggests motivation from opportunities for individual advancement and autonomy. Collectivism suggests appeals to group goals and support. Suggests people are more comfortable with traditional division of work. Managers around the world have similar needs, but derive different levels of need satisfaction from their jobs. Variables other than culture may be at play. Meaning of work --> needs --> motivation --> individual/group behavior. An employees" needs are determined largely by the cultural context of values and attitudes in which they live and work. Those needs then determine the meaning of work for that employee. Manager"s understanding of what work means in that employee"s life can then lead to the design of a culturally appropriate job context and reward system to guide individual and group employee job behavior to meet mutual goals. Psychological capital: openness to differences, capacity to change. Must develop a flexible model of leadership that can be applied anywhere.
