Uber resulted from a combination of technological advances, the taxicab industry"s apathy towards customers, and smart and opportunistic entrepreneurs. Uber is an example of a company that has followed the two broad strategic options from porter"s five forces framework. It established a distinct competitive position by providing high quality service to customers, who had low bargaining power within the conventional taxi cab industry structure. Of late, uber is also working with regulators to shape industry structure, rather than being seen as a disrupter and being served with cease and desist complaints and lawsuits. It is important to solidly establish a core business before substantial diversification into other areas.
