Europeans conducted crusades to conquer north africa and middle east in the name of religion. End of 13th century marked the beginning of europeans crushing domestic. Knights and noblemen would seize land and force commoners living on it into servitude (sound familiar?) European peasantry = first population forcibly organized under profit motive. Europe became a crowded space with a higher demand for resources and profit. When european countries expanded overseas, they were not starting anew. Goal = to obtain more land, resources, and labor sources.
