Document Summary

Objectives: upon completion of this lesson, the student will be able to: Must maintain constant state (rbc last about 120 days) Biconcave disc, size: 7-8um, incapable of synthesizing new protein or lipid. Describe the metabolic pathways for red cell atp production. Rbc obtains energy in the form of atp from the breakdown of glucose. Atp is needed to maintain: shape, flaxibility, integrity, normal levels of cations. Increased osmotic fragility is seen in cells with abnormal cation permeability and or decreased atp production (cell cannot maintain normal intracellular cations if glucose depleted) Bypasses formation of 3-phosphoglycerate and atp from 1,3- biphosphoglycerate. 2,3 dpg causes decrease in heme affinity for oxygen. Newborns have higher rbc count and hemoglobin (decrease as age) Glucose-6-phosp. oxidized in first step by g6pd, nadp+ reduced to. Nadph+ which then converts oxidized glutathione back to reduced. Hmp is defective, hemoglobin sulfhydryl groups oxidized, heme is denatured and precipitate to form heinz bodies.
