Protista meaning that protos=first reflecting that they were the earth s first eukaryotes: understand why protista are in their own kingdom and be able to recognize and characterize them. They are in their own kingdom because they have a nucleus, some are unicellular and others are multicellular. Plankton: swim/float but not against the ocean current. Macroalgae: large enough to be seen with unaided eye. Phytoplankton=photosynthetic and zooplankton=heterotrophic: know and recognize how protista are identified based on their movement. Amoebae use pseudopodia: recognize the major groups of protists as presented in class. Chlorophyta, rhodophyta, and ciliophora: understand and outline the life cycle of the plasmodium parasite that is responsible for malaria. Female mosquito injects sporozoites in the blood stream where they go to the liver and multiply.
