Best example of how culture works when unconstrained by biology. Names reflect larger cultural forces: traditional groups. Master trend: movement from tradition small number of names run from generation to generation (pattern of conformity, to very large number of names that are not shared. Normal limited to family and biblical names. Names reflect fashion some are revived, become chic (max, walter, sam) Everyone is trying to be different in the same way. Sounds: female names end in vowels a lot, male names in consonants. Decline of traditional family/religious values: growing individualism. Names can lead to normalization to integrate/conform into mainstream (immigrants: ex. Early 20th century british, germany and scandinavian names were popular (highest status) Assimilation: names as gateway to normality. First thing is to change their names: assimilate into the new gender.
