Plato: the three wishes of every man: to be healthy, to be rich by honest means, and to be beautiful. : beauty is right up there with the 3 major desires everybody has. Everyone wants to be healthy, rich and beautiful! Social scientists emphasize race, social class, gender for studying social inequalities, but : social scientists generally neglect the physical appearance. Beauty and handsomeness are at least as important in predicting life chances. Affects many aspects of life: jobs, income, marriage, grades, punishment, etc. Benefits of beauty to both women and men. Penalties for bad looks, especially for women: ugly people make less money in their jobs, less people want to marry them, etc. Most attractive girls in high school 10x more likely to marry than worst looking.
