When size of group increases, relationships and strength of network increases. Large groups of individuals with a definite set of authority relations. Formal organizations: groups that are rationally designed to achieve a goal. Bureau : meaning both office and a writing table. Bureaucracy: organization with clear hierarchy of authority and written rules of procedures. A pure type made by emphasising certain desirable traits that may not exist in reality. Separate levels: clear cut hierarchy of authority. Written rules: governs conduct of officials at all levels. Separation between tasks of officials and their personal lives. No members own materials they work with. Supervise activities of some individuals or groups by others to ensure compliant behavior. All levels subject to surveillance, lower levels observed most. Process where fast food principles dominate more sections of american society besides fast food. Control through automation: workers replaced with machines. Many industries adopt these practices such as universities and hospitals.
