Approximately 10% to 15% of the adult population of the us suffers from problems related to alcohol use disorders. Alcohol has cns effects that influence many behaviors: Euphoria: positive emotional state, feelings of pleasure, sense of well being, enhanced sense of enjoyment. Intoxication: loss of motor coordination and muscle control. Muscle relaxation: reduction in muscle tension (anticonvulsant effect) Analgesia: reduction in sensitivity to pain due to an alteration in the subjective emotional reaction to painful stimulation. Sedative-hypnotic effect: a sleep like state of drowsiness and dreamlike detachment from surroundings.
