Has more power than just a list of sentences. Generated by rewrite rules: major syntactic categories. Don"t need to know semantics of each word to determine the behavior. If it is a noun, you know what phrase type it has to be part of and if it can follow/precede another type of phrase: see syntax notes for basic rewrite rules of english.
